// Indian Laws That Protect You

The Laws Most Indians
Don't Know Exist

India has strong consumer and worker protections. Most people simply don't know how to use them.

Consumer Protection
Consumer Protection Act, 2019
If a seller gives you a defective product, refuses a valid refund, or defrauds you online — file at edaakhil.nic.in. Claims up to ₹50 lakh go to the District Commission. No lawyer required. Time limit: 2 years.
Employment Rights
Payment of Wages Act, 1936
If your salary is more than 7 days late (10 days for large employers), your employer is in legal violation. File with the Labour Commissioner. They can be fined and ordered to pay. Applies to startups too.
Tenant Rights
State Rent Control Acts
Every state has a Rent Control Act. Your landlord cannot evict without proper notice, raise rent arbitrarily, or withhold your deposit beyond the deadline (typically 30 days). Most tenants have never read it.
Workplace Rights
Industrial Disputes Act, 1947
Section 25F requires employers to give proper notice and compensation before termination. If you were fired without notice pay, you're legally entitled to compensation — even from startups and SMEs.
Property Rights
Transfer of Property Act, 1882
Section 105 governs tenancy agreements. Your landlord has specific obligations on how they can end a tenancy and return your deposit. A written demand letter citing this Act is often all it takes.
Court Access
Legal Services Authority Act, 1987
If your income is below ₹1 lakh/year, you qualify for free legal aid from the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Most eligible Indians don't know this exists — LexAI will tell you if you qualify.

What Can LexAI Help
You With?

Describe your situation in plain language (Hindi or English) and get a complete analysis.

🏠 "My landlord hasn't returned my ₹60,000 deposit after 45 days of vacating."
LexAI will cite the exact section of your state's Rent Control Act, tell you exactly what you're owed, and generate a formal demand letter for you to send. Most deposits are returned after this step.
💰 "My employer hasn't paid my salary for 2 months and stopped responding."
Under the Payment of Wages Act 1936, you can file at the Labour Commissioner's office. LexAI identifies the exact filing process for your state, the authority to approach, and drafts your complaint.
📦 "Flipkart/Amazon seller sent a defective product and refused my refund."
Consumer Protection Act 2019 is very clear here. LexAI will explain what you're entitled to, how to file at edaakhil.nic.in, and write your complaint letter citing the exact statute sections.
🔥 "I was fired without notice or reason from my job in India."
The Industrial Disputes Act requires proper notice pay and compensation. LexAI identifies what you're owed based on your tenure and company size, and drafts your formal legal demand to the employer.
🏗️ "Builder hasn't delivered my flat on time and refuses compensation."
RERA (Real Estate Regulatory Authority) gives you strong rights. LexAI explains the compensation you're entitled to under RERA and how to file a complaint with your state's RERA authority.
📱 "An online course/service charged my card but never delivered."
Under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and IT Act, you can dispute the charge and file a complaint. LexAI identifies which authority to approach — Consumer Forum or banking ombudsman — and why.
